THE COLOSSEUM

Hotel Hassler Roma is located 2,3 km away from the Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheater which is an oval amphitheater in the center of the city of Rome. It is the largest amphitheater ever built. Adjacent to the Roman Forum, it is in the list of the UNESCO World Heritage sites and is one of the symbols of the Eternal City.

THE COLOSSEUM CONSTRUCTION

Construction began under the emperor Vespasian in AD 72 and was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir Titus. The Colosseum was famous for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. It could hold between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators.

You can enjoy a nice walk of less than 30 minutes from the Hotel Hassler Roma, passing through the “Monti” district, a very nice neighborhood famous for its art galleries and wineries.

The Colosseum is located next to another renowned archaeological site, the Imperial Forum, a series of monumental forum (public squares), constructed in Rome over a period of one and a half century, between 46 BC and 113 AD. The forums were the center of the Roman Republic and of the Roman Empire.
During the early 20th century, it was built the famous Via dei Fori Imperiali which cross the middle of the site.

Furthermore, the Colosseum is located close to another famous mass entertainment venue in the ancient Rome, Circo Massimo. It was well known for chariot races. Situated in the valley between the Aventine and Palatine Hills, it was the first and largest stadium in ancient Rome and its later Empire.
